Why we exist
Health Adviser began with a moment of humbling clarity.
Our founder had spent just over a decade inside a South African medical scheme's marketing department — ten years of building campaigns, shaping messages, explaining benefits to the public. Then he resigned. And a week later, for the first time, he had to go out and buy medical aid for himself.
He didn't know where to start.
Ten years on the inside, and standing on the outside he walked into the same fog as everyone else. Schemes describe near-identical benefits in different language, because differentiation is the point. Every plan is technically comparable and practically incomparable. And the person trying to choose — already anxious, already overwhelmed — is left to guess.
"It's very hard to unthink what you already know," he says. "For the first time I was outside the box, and I finally felt what it feels like to stand in the consumer's shoes. That was the moment I realised that solutions built by the industry, for the industry, are almost never built for the consumer."
